Ben Gautrey 2008 - Anglesey - September

Anglesey 12th - 14th September 2008

12/09/08

Click Here for Bens Web Blog www.bengautrey.comI arrived at Anglesey on the Thursday and the wind was blowing a gale!

We had arrived nice and early to try and get ahead of ourselves but the weather played hell and we postponed set up until the Friday.

On Friday I was doing a track day with no limits as it was the Friday before the race weekend and I had to gain more track knowledge before the race.

All morning I improved and after lunch I went out on my new Aprilia rs125 courtesy of Aspire Rail and it felt quite comfortable.

I did two sessions on that then went back out on my other bike for the last session to scrub new tyres in ready for Saturday racing.

I was riding round and then I lost the front end coming down the cork screw which ended my day but didn’t do much damage to myself or the bike, we got the bike fixed ready for Saturday morning.

Ben GautreyThe weather was looking very hopeful Saturday morning and I couldn’t wait for qualifying.

I qualified 7th overall which was my best qualifying position to date and I was once again on the second row just like at Pembrey so I knew my start would play a big part for my race.

Race 1 was a great start for me and I found myself 5th through the first corner then dropped back a place during the race.

As the race progressed I could see the riders in front of me and I could count that I was in position 5th!

There were about 2 laps remaining and coming down the deadly corkscrew I somehow managed to lose the front end again and down I went!

I wasn’t best pleased but I knew I was competing up front and that no-one could take that away.

Race 2 I was determined to have a good race and my start showed it.

Fourth through the first corner and then I was overtaken twice.

After 3 laps of trying to push hard I chucked it through the left hander before the start finish and wacked the throttle on too early which sent me right off my bike and sliding down the smooth circuit of Anglesey.

Gutted I was.

But I was lucky so far to keep on getting up from my crashes so I crossed my fingers and hoped for a better Sunday.

Ben GautreyOn Sunday morning warm up I was twentieth and didn’t look comfortable or feel comfortable on the bike.

But I was just trying to keep things steady and was looking at how I was taking the corners and how I could make them better.

Race 1 of Sunday was a good one for me as I was running 10th for a good while until I took two people within one lap and then I saw the last lap flag and then the red flag!

I was 8th but when the red flag was out I was 10th the lap previous so frustratingly I was put down as 10th.

But I’d finished which made me little more satisfied. Race 2 I found myself racing against myself the majority of the race until I made a few mistakes on one lap which caused me to be overtook and then the last lap I thought about going to take my opponent down the corkscrew!

But then I realized that my look wasn’t on my side during the weekend and sat back and finished the race 9th.

At the previous race meeting at Pembrey I had gained four top ten finishes and here in Anglesey I was looking to repeat that kind of form.

Apart from my unfortunate crashes on Saturday while positioned well in the races, I had still managed two top ten finishes on the Sunday which I was very proud of and felt I had achieved what I’d come to do.

Even though crashing in both races on Saturday I had at least shown my watching family and interested on - lookers that I could compete with the top 6 riders.

Thanks to Fletchers for all their support, Aspire for my new bike and all my other sponsors and family.
