2001 Season

Round Two at Elvington Park

Round 2 was at Elvington Park a fast but very rough circuit so this was going to be the test of the stock suspension. At the top end of the circuit there is a 110mph plus double right hander which is almost a double apex corner with some serious bumps (or rather potholes).

In the practice sessions I was just trying to get the bike to float over the bumps a few changes after the first session, and still no better the second time out (probably worse) as I had a big moment ending up out the seat and losing both feet off the pegs flat out in 4th. Time to make some major changes going as soft as possible at the rear and slightly softer at the front, the next race was the formula 600 race which was none championship so just more practice really.

Race 1 Formula 600 Clubmans

What a difference that made a flag to flag win easy and getting into the low 1; 01's which is only a second slower than on my Honda from last year.

Race 2 600 Clubmans Cup

Not so easy in this one as Goodings on his really fast R6 on slicks will be the man 2 beat chasing hard but loosing about 6 bike lengths off the line just on power. There is no way that I can get close more power needed. Hopefully I shall be getting the Yamaha tuned shortly by
Ashton Performance Centre. Finished third.

Race 3 1300 Clubmans Cup

Now I even have the big bikes 2 contend with so I was happy to finish third with no big bikes in front of me. It must be all the bumps stopping the get the power down, sometimes they will pull past you down the straight's but as long as you can out brake them into the turns it ok. Mid race I out braked myself at the end of the start/finish straight and loosing out on the front two dropping me down a few places but soon picked them off again to finish third.

Race 4 600 Clubmans

The race was red flagged on the second lap which wasn't so bad for me as I had a crap start and was struggling to pass Alan Milburn I could go faster but not able to keep in front. The second start was better first into turn 1 off and running to the finish flag. Race result 1st.

 Race 5 600 Clubmans Cup

A good start in second place and chasing Goodings as hard as I could now I know I am riding hard as when things are right my times are so constant not more than tenth of a second covering every lap. Still losing a good second a lap on Goodings but what do you expect with a stock bike against a tuned bike with Ohlins suspension and full slicks. Finished 2nd but getting closer.

Race 6 1300 Clubmans Cup

Race 6 was almost a repeat of the last but with the excitement of David Carr on his R1 passing me down every straight. Race result 2nd

I am getting more confident with the R6 now going as fast as last year on the Kited CBR 600 and not getting beat by the loads of R1 and the few GSXR 1000's and Blades things can still improve.

A big thank you to Ashton Performance Centre and Magsport.

Next up Olivers Mount at Scarborough not my favriout place but it's a championship round so I have to go a careful ride around and hopefully pick up a handful of points I am there on bank holiday Monday 6th of May see you then.
