Donington Park 3rd/4th June 2002
A pretty uneventful practice on Monday afternoon and I managed to get back to the lap times I was doing on my last visit to Donington relatively easily. I was certain of bettering it the next day.
Tuesday practice was to be my only outing of that day. After a few laps of practice I finally got the Craner Curves right for the first time in ages and I was on a good lap. Unfortunately I turned in a little early at McCleans and clipped the kerb. I'd seen others do it before and had no ill effects however, I lost my footing and slid off the right hand side of the bike. In the process I trapped my right foot in the rear wheel and was dragged along for several yards before it came free. I managed to scramble off the track and awaited the recovery vehicles.
In the medical centre they presented me with the sole of my right boot. It wasn't until then I realised it had been torn off. My right foot was really painful but it turned out it wasn't broken, only bruised.
Inspecting both the boot and the bike afterwards I realised that the rear disk had been trying to saw through the boot and failed. There is a blue line all around the right hand side of the rear wheel rim, hub and disk. It is a great testament to the strength and construction of the Sidi Vertebra boots I was wearing.
My sincere thanks go to Andy Fern and Feridax (1957) ltd for supplying me with such good quality boots, which undoubtedly saved me from more serious injuries.
NEXT RACE IS AT SNETTERTON ON 14th, 15th and 16TH JUNE
