Rounds 4 & 5 at Cadwell Park on May 12/13
Saturday got off to a good start with warm sunny weather which was to last all weekend. However the first problem of the weekend appeared before practice had even started. A shortage of marshals meant that there not enough people to cover the full circuit. Faced with the possibility of having to run on the shorter club circuit appeals for volunteers were made over the paddock P.A. system. This brought forth just enough volunteers to cover the full circuit and an unexpected return to marshalling for me as my weekend would now consist of parking the bike after each practice or race and heading straight down to Hall Bends to help out. Race 1 on Saturday saw me make my best start yet and at half distance I was 4th in class right on the tail of John Fisher who is 2nd in the championship until exiting Charlie's I made my first racing attempt at a high side which resulted in a loud squeal from the back tyre, full opposite lock, and me leaving the seat. Luckily, when I came down the bike was still under me and after a rough ride down the grass to the bottom of the Park Straight dip I managed to get back on track having lost several places and eventually finished 5th. Race 2 I was much more cautious with the thought that maybe I'd tried to get one meeting too many out of my tyres although I still managed another 5th in class, this time without incident.
Sunday's first race involved a race long scrap with a couple of other riders and I eventually finished 6th in class, which was to be my only finish of the day. Race 2 I made a bad start and at the end of Park Straight on the first lap I left my braking a bit late to try and make up some ground, but when I closed the throttle the engine stayed on full power due to the cable fraying and jamming in its outer casing. I luckily remembered to hit the kill switch before panic set in and had my second wild ride across the grass of the weekend just managing to stop as I reached the tyre wall.
I was then informed by my marshal friends that had I dropped the bike I would have been allowed to use my years of experience and "pick your own bike up" thanks lads!
Rounds 6 & 7 are at Pembrey on May 27 & 28 I've got new tyres and a new throttle cable so I'm ready to go.
We are expecting to be short of marshals again so if anyone wants to join the fun please do.
