Alex Gault - Round 6 CB500 Cup - Oulton Park - July 2006

Round 6 of the CB500 Cup took place on the 8th of July at the fantastic Oulton Park Circuit.

Again blessed by dry “ish” weather I say that; as it did rain but not for Alex’s races although it did threaten and did make set-up a bit of a worry.

In all three sessions on track we opted for a dry set up and it paid off. There was also a lot of talk before the meeting of just how well Alex could go, Dominic Cann who we have known for a long time and who raced CB’s back when it was a National Championship, said he’d done a 1.55 something, that was before they put in Hizzy’s chicane most thought this with the other alterations to the track would add on around 5 seconds so most thought a sub 2 min lap would be OK.

In timed qualifying due to stoppages classes were out together and the track was very busy reported to be 60 bikes out at once, this aside Alex got into a fast group of 400s and 600 hornets, Alex took pole for the CB race with a 1.59.77. Unbelievable it must fell into place for him as he had got under the 2 min mark on the second lap and 11th fastest overall.

Race 1

A leisurely start didn’t hold him up to much as he took the lead going down the Avenue, faultless performance seen him take the win by just over 13 & 1/2 seconds.

With a quicker lap time of 1.59.11, Could he get under the 59 barrier in race 2?

Race 2

Now you know? One word from me and he does what he likes! (think about it).

He had said that this was not fun anymore and he wanted to stay back in the pack and play. I said if you are beside bikes there is always the chance of a collision and crashing out! Again a leisurely start, however!!!!

He never broke away from the pack this time, instead it looked like Jamie had latched on to the back of Alex, round for the end of lap one and Jamie overtook Alex going up the start / finish straight Alex re-took the lead going round “Old Hall Corner” and was then caught on camera!

This comment from Photographer, Garry Harris Hewsham who again made the journey with wife Vickky to watch and photograph Alex.

Hi Alex,
The picture was taken in the last race on lap 2.
Just coming out of “Old Hall Corner” coming onto The Avenue.
We nearly put a caption of:
“That’s what a bike looks like close behind me!”
Regards Gary and Vikky

I’ve got another idea of what was going on!!!!!

Anyway a bit after this he got his head down and did a 1.58.78 (I think a new lap record round Oulton in it’s present form for a CB). And won the 5 lap race by 6 seconds.

Short and sweet, one day meetings don’t lend themselves to a lot happening, thanks to every one who came to support Alex.
