Round 7 J.R.A. Formula 80 Championships Alex Champion
Well, this was it. Alex chance to clinch the Championship with one round still to go. He did in fine style, in front of one of the men who made it possible, Jamie Masterman Head of Vehicle sales for E.P.BARRUS.
Jamie had dropped in with his two children, to see for his self what Alex is up to. We think he was suitably impressed, both with what we have done with the Motorhispania Rx and Alex’s riding. The weather was fantastic, I know we always talk about, or complain about, the weather, but what a summer this has been and today was no exception.
After saying that, in practice there were quite a few “off’s” and in Alex’s practice, a red flag stopped the session after only two laps. I had the chance to have a few words with him before he went back out, he said it was very slippy and that there were bikes lying at every corner, We put it down to the morning dew, not being burnt off by the sun yet. The rest of the practice session went ok and it was onto the first race.
Race two in the programme the 125/80 Trophy race, starting from the back of the 125 grid the formula 80’s go on the same start. Now I don’t know what he did, and for that matter neither does Alex, but the best start from him all year, seen him catapulted into the middle of the 125 pack and in the lead of the 80’s. This was all he needed to slip the clutches of Matt Hoyle, who is now sitting in second place in the championship. Alex had an easy win whilst racing some of the 125’s.
The Important one, the Points race and scheduled for race 13 of the day. So whatever happened we were guaranteed an early finish and the possibility of being home early.
On the line, P1 Alex, P2 Matt, P3 Dan. That was the front row, and must be the main contenders for the win. Green Flag raised at the back of the grid to signal all is ready, Start lights Red,…wait for it…. Green and the race was on, Matt flew into the lead followed by Dan then Alex. By the end of the first lap as the headed back to “paddock bend” Alex had taken the lead from Matt in second and Dan in third, that was how it ended.
Two comfortable wins for Alex and another valuable 9 points to secure the championship for him with one round still to go.
At the next round they award double points so there are 18 points up for grabs. Alex’s 19-point lead means he cannot be caught and he is now The 2003 Junior Racing Association’s Formula 80 champion.
Alex and myself, would like to thank every one of you, who made this possible, and what a fantastic result for every one of us in the team.
