FEMA 20th Anniversary: MEP Ride through Brussels!
Issued 1st July 2008
On 25 June 2008, FEMA celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a special MEP Motorcycle Ride organised in Brussels. More than 150 people showed interest in participating in the various activities set up for the occasion, among which a beautiful ride through Brussels city centre, the heart of Europe.
The Parc du Cinquantenaire offered the perfect setting for FEMA 20th anniversary celebrations.
More than 150 people, among which 18 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) coming from 11 different countries, as well as assistants, but also officials from the European Commission and several other stakeholders registered to gather under the FEMA and European flags for the ride.
The concept of the event is simple: get on bikes those who decide on the future of motorcycling!
This year, the event took on a new dimension, offering participants a broad range of activities.
The first SAFERIDER User Forum, giving participants the opportunity to express their views on the development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and In-Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS) integration on motorcycles for the most crucial functionalities, took place in the afternoon. FEMA newly elected President, Hans Petter Strifeldt, took this opportunity to underline FEMA role in the project and position on these issues (President's speech).

Two test tracks were also organised, offering riders a chance to try different types of motorcycles, while beginners - in the context of the Initial Rider Training project- could discover the joys of riding a powered two wheeler under the supervision of qualified instructors.
A Press Conference was given by FEMA President, with the support of this year’s MEP Ride Patrons: Mr. Olajos (Hungary), Mr Markov (Germany), Mr Szejna (Poland), Ms Lynne (United Kingdom) and Ms Segelström (Sweden).
The event concluded with a dinner and FEMA Birthday celebrations: FEMA President gave an overview of FEMA’s work, achievements and recent successes.
It was also the occasion to present FEMA’s new image, with a new logo and the first issue of the newly designed FEMA newsletter.
Overall, sponsors, patrons and participants all praised FEMA for an extremely well organised event.
It goes without saying that the support of FEMA volunteers, among which Marshalls from FEMA’s Belgian association the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG Belgium) and the Belgian Federal Police who escorted the ride, contributed to the success of this unique event.
Brussels inhabitants, who gathered applauding and taking pictures of the "EU convoy", will remember this very special Ride through Brussels City, the Heart of Europe!
