Record Breaker Martin on Top at Scarborough

Issued 21st September 2008

For a record breaking sixth successive year, Hydrex Bike Animal Honda rider Guy Martin won the Steve Henshaw International Gold Cup after another display of domination at a sun-drenched Oliver's Mount, Scarborough this weekend.

The 26 year old from Kirmington in Lincolnshire was in scintillating form all weekend as he remained unbeaten aboard the Shaun Muir Racing 1000cc Honda Fireblade around the narrow switchback closed public roads course high above the Yorkshire resort's South Bay.

Martin took a comfortable victory in both legs of the National Superbike race, chased home by TT winners Ryan Farquhar and Ian Lougher in Saturday's race, with Farquhar and Ian Hutchinson following Martin home in Sunday's eight lapper.

But it was in today's feature race that Martin was most interested in as he set about beating the record of five wins held by Geoff Duke and the late David Jefferies.

In consummate fashion, Martin romped to victory ahead of Farquhar, Michael Dunlop and Ian Lougher, and in doing so claimed the first major victory of the season for the Hydrex Bike Animal team.

Martin couldn't quite repeat his heroics on the 600cc Honda and despite winning his heat on Saturday, he had to settle for third behind William Dunlop and John McGuinness in the opening David Jefferies 600 Cup race and then today, he was penalised for a jump start and ended up fourth in the Darran Lindsay Trophy.

Guy Martin: "It's been a bit of a lean year on the roads but to win the Gold Cup again and beat Geoff Duke and DJ's record is the icing on the cake.”

“We had no major problems all weekend and it was just a case of setting a comfortable pace and not pushing too hard, and it all came together.”

“I had some magnificent support all weekend so thanks to the fans and the team has done a great job for me also.”

“It was a case this weekend of the sun shining on the righteous and I'm over the moon."

Shaun Muir: "Guy has put in another fantastic performance and you can't see anyone beating him round here on a superbike at present.”

“It's good to get a major win under our belts and both Guy and the team have done a great job, and it's an honour to take the record of six Gold Cup wins”

“Hopefully this will spur Guy on to another impressive performance at Silverstone next weekend as he deserves a good result in BSB to round the season off."
